Fishing Report

June / July 2020

June 01st

We have certainly had some challenges the last several months with global issues and weather patterns a bit loosy goosy for the month of April and May. We are now at June 1st as I write this and we have had some ver comfortable and cooler weather here in Michigan. Our May fishing was nothing short of terrific with a few isolated challenging days with water flow and turbidity. The creek is currently at 62.5 but can warm fast with better opportunities and fish health management in the morning hours or late evening. Remember we often rest the local waters for the month of July and part of August as the water temps the last several years have approached near those lethal mid 70 degree temps. Always important to carry a stream thermometer with you and if you find 52 to 64 degrees you are in the golden range. We have enjoyed the several trips we did for May with more on the books for June and a special congrats and great work to the anglers that have participated in a local fish. As of yesterday there was a sporadic mid day sulphur hatch and by late evening the adult spinners bounced along the upper sky but as we fell below 65 degrees at around 9:30 or so they never tagged the water to deposit their eggs and flew back to the trees or for a later descent. Please also practice C & R as often as possible not only locally but elsewhere as these fish have the ability to live long lives for a fish (many non-migratory) and its worth the respect to send them back home and perhaps have a father and son have a chance at a nice sized fish or a trophy. Remember there are always fiberglass replicas given a clear pic, the girth and length. I also wish to thank all past and present customers at this time, as of July 7th our Guide Service turns 20 years young. Best of luck with your continued and future pursuits and a very healthy and safe summer ahead!

May 2020

May 16th

Another strange spring here for Michigan with cooler than normal temps, a bit less rain and trees, shrubs and flowers now blooming or just past. Our local steelhead season has pretty much come to that seasonal close with very good fishing at times for the month of April and first part of May. Was great to see many anglers taking advantage of the seasonal trout opener and locally we had some great success as well! Since the opener, the creek has been fishing mostly stable with flow rates slightly below average for this month but now with after the pre-weekend rain we are at 155 cfs which is a tad high. However, after these fish go on the worm and grub bite the waters will settle and hatch activity will resume with beatis, caddis, midges, an occasional March Brown and other aquatic macro's taking order in abundance and forage selection. A bit unsure of the stocking efforts for this year and have personally not caught a stocker but some better than average sized fish with gorgeous color! The up North bite was slightly delayed with higher water and cooler temps but last report I heard, the Hendrickson (Hennies) were hatching regularly in certain areas near Grayling, MI. We are all hoping to return to our most regular life styles during this Covid-19 scare and wish everyone a very safe and healthy spring and continued summer...enjoy time out fishing your favorite waterways with safety and care!

April 2020

April 09th

Long winter to a nice transition to spring here as I write this report...although, concerned of course about our community welfare during this pandemic that reached here by March of this year. Natures dynamics seasonally seem to be cooperating well with spring time fishing conditions here locally. The water levels have been at most ideal flow and color for a good week or two after our last rains and the stream temps are now pushing mid 40's. However, more rain forecasted tonight which should bring in that last or second to last mild push with drop backs also turning hungry and throughout the system looking for an easy meal. Fair to Good reports as of late of both spawning fish and drop backs. Egg patterns, stoneflies, caddis and other small nymphs and larvae have been producing some nice sized 5 to 8 pound on average fish with light tackle. The air is crisp and the trees are budding and insect are hatching...for the upper river system try fishing midges, emerging mayflies, scuds, natural nymphs and other larvae and for the warming water streamer bite you may just want to throw your favorite baitfish pattern with some silver or green. The local gem of our creek will be opening the last Saturday of April and that provides some very fun but yes at times challenging trout fishing with a great population of browns and fair numbers of rainbow. We had a mostly warm and wet winter with minimal ice pack here locally but our lakes and ponds are beginning to fish well for pan fish, pike and bass. Remember in Oakland County, we are never more than a few miles away from a body of water...try fishing spiders, small foam poppers and other small attractive nymphs with movement for gills, pumpkinseed or sunfish. For the angler targeting bass or pike, try fishing a leech or smaller baitfish pattern and cover drops and transitions off the reeds or other structure. Be safe and healthy this spring and upcoming summer season and please remember to practice social distance when out on your waterways...this too shall pass and we will be stronger from it! God Bless!
