Fishing Report

June 2023

June 03rd

As I write this post we are in a serious drought with local waters very low and warming with ambient temperatures in the upper 80's and low 90's. The opener this season brought many anglers out to the local waters with adverse stream conditions. High water and high turbidity made the bite tough and the fish were hunkered down! The month of May and first few days of June was unseasonably warm and water temps have been up to 68 degrees as reported. We have been fishing as conditions allow us to and midges, caddis, scuds and sowbugs have been taking some nice fish. Mostly rainbows or steelhead smolts as well as parr are being caught with fewer browns this season in the mix. We are currently booking spring and summer Guided Float Trips for trout for those interested? These float Trips take place in Northern Michigan and are about 8 hours long.  We are looking forward to the Michigan Hex Hatch near the end of this month and we are also hosting Guided Night Time Hex Trips this season. Have a great summer Fly Anglers and watch the stream temps and use good judgement when fishing. Tight Lines!

We had a good season fishing locally with more rainbows, steelhead parr and smolts to hand. Fewer nice sized browns this season but good action! A special thank you to all  who booked this year with Woodland Rivers! The local creek was mostly clear and low this season but with stealth tactics and light line we were able to produce some good fish. The summer water temps were higher than usual and we rested the creek mostly for July and August. The up North bite was good for the several Trout Trips that went out. As I write this report we are at about the peak run for the annual king salmon run and the fish are very healthily sized this year with many fish 30 pounds or better. This was a very busy season for us locally and the flies of choice were scuds, sow bugs, midges, baetis, P.T.'s and hares ears to name a few which brought many good fish to hand. The local creek closes here soon but opportunities exist throughout the Clinton River system. The mainstream of the Clinton has been very low with spotty rain and for the fall steelhead migratory run we most definitely need some November rains to push the fish up. For the steelhead angler pursuing the local waters, remember to go light if nymphing or fishing egg flies and move around a bit to cover productive water. For those swing anglers the fall bite can  be strong with aggressive fall takes and various spey flies work throughout the late fall season. We are currently booking for fall steelhead for Michigan Destination Float Trips as well as spring steelhead.  We are booking fast for spring and early summer trout opportunities as well for 2023. We also continue to offer Gift Certificates which make a special Gift for those discriminating Anglers as well as the novice. Gift Certificates are good for one whole year upon issuing date and are good for local and destination Guided Fly-Fishing Trips.

Have a wonderful fall season and take good caution out there as you venture out to your favorite fishing holes. All the best and tight Lines!

May 2022

May 03rd

The opening Trout weekend brought a lot of anglers to the creeks, streams and rivers across Michigan. The local bite was a bit slow for the morning hours and not many hatches to report. Saw an occasional blue winged olive make its angelic flight off of the water but the fish were not keying in on anything in particular. The water temp was an ideal 55 degrees taken on Saturday the 30th of April. The streamer bite was good late afternoon and I witnessed an estimated 18 inch brown caught north of town on a white bead headed wooly bugger. The creek system was in good shape with moderate flow and a decent stain. Remember to keep the waters clean this season when you are out fishing and observing. Take out what you take in and be stream conscious out there! The creek received its annual stocking of brown trout and these fish tend to be a bit sensitive and a quick Catch & Release is most ideal should you hook into a few. The Clinton river had a decent spring run of steelhead and drop backs are still being caught this early May. The fishing up north for steelhead this season was hit or miss with a few good weeks of very productive fishing.

Enjoy the fishing season everyone and stay safe out there on the waters you pursue!
