Giant Sturgeon

This sturgeon is still alive, just worn out from the fight. They turned him loose after the photo

Image

This Sturgeon was caught on the Willamette River just below Oregon City two weeks ago. It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1". It was 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.

Any Sturgeon over five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water.

They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

I've seen a lot of fishing shows where Sturgeon was the target fish... but I have't ever seen one that big!

Any idea on weight or length?
I wonder how old a beast like that is. They grow especially slow from what I understand.

I hate to ruin your day but that sturgeon was caught in the Fraser River (BC) and it was caught in 2005. That photo has made the rounds for years with all kinds of fish stories tied to it.

Check it out here.

I'm not surprised that photo is recirculating, what an awesome fish.
