FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 4, 2010

Clinton River Watershed Council to Host a “General Bug Identification Workshop”

The Clinton River Watershed Council is hosting a “General Bud Identification” workshop on Saturday, January 16th, 2010, from 10AM – 1PM at Wolcott Mill Metropark. Interested residents are encouraged to attend this workshop to learn basic knowledge and characteristics about these aquatic organisms.

These aquatic bugs technically known as Benthic Macroinvertebrates are a useful tool to indicate a streams health. Different bugs require specific conditions to survive and reproduce. Some are very pollution sensitive while others can tolerate more polluted waters. A stream’s health can be determined by the number and types of bugs that live in it. This workshop is part of CRWC’s “Adopt-A-Stream” program (volunteer water quality monitoring program) and consists of a 3 hour training session with a “hands on” portion for participants who want to test their knowledge.

Registration is required. To register, contact the CRWC office (248-601-0606 or e-mail contact@crwc.org). Communities and residents are encouraged to participate in these volunteer events to learn about their local watershed, its current quality, and what landowners can do to protect water resources.

The Clinton River watershed covers 760 square miles through four counties (Macomb, Oakland, Lapeer, and St. Clair). Over 1.5 million people live in the 60 communities through which the Clinton River flows before reaching Lake St. Clair. CRWC is a non-profit organization that protects, enhances, and celebrates the Clinton River, its watershed, and Lake St. Clair.
